A good dress watch is arguably an essential item of a man’s wardrobe. It is an indispensable element of an elegant outfit that subtly, yet effectively, professes its owner’s class and sense of style. Offering timeless sophistication, beautiful dress watches are prized possessions, which are usually reserved for special occasions. Here, we offer you a brief list of our favourite timepieces that boast refined elegance.

Rolex Cellini Time

Rolex is primarily known for its traditionally chunky, heavy-duty timepieces. However, the Cellini model offers a welcome variation to the otherwise stylistic uniformity of the Rolex collection. The watch is available in 18 karat white gold as well as a unique Everose. The distinctive Everose variation is achieved with a Rolex-patented polishing technology that grants higher endurance to scratches and scuffs. Furthermore, it features a COSC-certified self-winding chronometer movement with a 48 hour power reserve, all encompassed in a beautiful 39mm case. Following the tradition of classic watchmaking, the watch boasts a clear white dial with accentuated hour markings in either white or pink gold to match the case. As a finishing touch, the watch comes with a beautiful stitched alligator leather strap. We believe it is a truly noteworthy proposition for those seeking a combination of Rolex’s advanced technology with a subtle, classic appearance.

The watch currently retails at £11,200.

Drive de Cartier Automatic

Cartier’s unusually shaped watches have come to challenge trends and redefine classic elegance. The Drive de Cartier is a particularly sleek, 40mm, cushion-shaped timepiece that offers bold masculinity while still looking subtle on the wrist. The watch departs from a conventional style of dress watches through the inclusion of rugged elements. Some examples of this are a guilloché on the dial and a crown reminiscent of industrial bolts used in automobiles. Inside, the watch contains a self-winding movement, the calibre 1904-PS MC. It is available in stainless steel as well as 18 karat pink gold and comes on a semi-matte alligator strap. With its large case and unconventional details, this watch is a noteworthy proposition for fans of a more laid-back elegance. If you’re seeking a versatile timepiece to wear during formal events, as well as with a casual attire, this might be a great option for you.

The price for the watch in pink gold is £17,200.

IWC Portofino Automatic

A cult classic from the IWC watch family, the Portofino model epitomises an understated style and good taste. It offers an automatic movement, the calibre 35111, with a 42 hour power reserve. This is all encompassed within a beautiful 40mm case, available from numerous materials and finishes. Our favourite is the striking 18 karat red gold case attached to an exquisite dark brown leather alligator strap. This unique band is produced by the Italian shoe manufacturer, Santoni. The dial of the watch is stripped down to the bare essentials, featuring an easily-readable, uncluttered layout with Roman numerals and simple hour markers. This is the most minimalist watch on our list. We recommend it to those seeking a watch that is truly versatile, simultaneously modern and timeless.

IWC Portofino Automatic in red gold is priced at: £9,500.

Omega De Ville Prestige

While Omega is mostly associated with high-performance watches, its De Ville line merges the brand’s high-end technology with flawless design. At the heart of this timepiece is the famous and exclusive Omega Co-Axial calibre 2500. It is available in a variety of different colours and finishes. Our favourite, however, is the 39.5 mm white gold on a black leather strap. It offers an unusual combination of elegant styling with a fun dash of colour, accentuated through the blue hands and hour markers. With this in mind, Omega’s De Ville Prestige is a wonderful, classic timepiece that offers the high Omega standard alongside an original take on classic styling.

This model retails for: £7,840.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Date

In contrast to the previously mentioned brands, Jaeger-LeCoultre is known especially for its classic pieces. The Master Ultra Thin Date is a truly refined dress watch that perfectly complements a tux and polished shoes. It features the 899/1 calibre automatic movement within a beautiful pink gold case. Measuring 40mm, the case is perfectly balanced to appear slim yet simultaneously masculine on the wrist. Furthermore, we find this watch particularly appealing for its unusual juxtaposition of the pink gold case against a slate-grey dial. While classic in essence, the enchanting colour combination adds an extra dash of personality to its wearer.

It currently retails for: £12,400.

Beautifully crafted automatic dress watches will always lend prestige and sophistication to its wearer. There are no firm parameters that clearly define what makes a good dress watch. However, we’d recommend opting for a timepiece that offers not only a beautiful design but also excellent mechanical quality that will stand the test of time.
