What is involved in a Jacob & Co Watch Service?

The watch is broken down and the movement is removed from the case. The bracelet, case, seals and movement are inspected thoroughly to diagnose any issues. We strip the whole movement and the case components.

Every part inside the watch is inspected for wear and anything showing the slightest sign of deterioration is removed and replaced with new parts from the manufacturer. Tolerances inside watches are so fine that even the smallest defect can affect performance.

Once inspected all parts are then put through our ultrasonic cleaner with specialist fluids, which removed old grease from the parts.

After it goes through the cleaning agent and three rinsing agents, it is put through a drying process resulting in a completely clean movement ready for re-assembly and lubricating.

We assemble the movement and fit the dial and hands assuring everything are aligned and then time test the watch to assure it is performing accurately.

The case is reassembled so it is now a watertight empty case. We then pressure test it to the required bar to ensure there are no leaks.

We then move on to the case and bracelet (if the watch has one) which is cleaned and refurbished. We use various polishing, cutting and grinding wheels to remove any small dents, scratches and imperfections where possible, brining the watch as close to new condition as possible.

Watch is reassembled and time tested for the second time and placed on test for 2-3 days on our workshop simulator which slowly moves the watch round in different positions. This allows us to monitor the watches performance and see if any further adjustments are required.

Your Jacob & Co watch must always be diagnostically inspected first to produce an accurate repair quotation, this allows the watchmaker to find out exactly what issues need addressed and price any parts accordingly. However most repairs are covered in a full Jacob & Co watch service price which varies depending on model.

The price is made up of the master watchmaker’s time in servicing the watch (which can take up to 4 hours) and the cost of any parts required to restore performance.

If you are being offered a service for cheaper it would be advisable to proceed with caution. It may be generic parts that are being used in your repair resulting in your watch losing its worth and running into similar problems in the near future.

The old adage holds true for luxury watch ownership, buy cheap, buy twice. Having your watch maintained by an official service centre will ensure your Jacob & Co watch lasts long into the future and retains its value.

The History of Jacob & Co

Jacob & Co

A distinguished powerhouse in the jewellery industry, Jacob & Co offers designs which find consistent appeal amongst the world’s international elite, from Hollywood stars to high-achieving athletes. Since 2002, Jacob & Co has been producing fascinating timepieces not shy of Swiss haute horlogerie.

The founder of the business – Jacob Arabo arrived in the United States from Russia in 1979. He studied jewellery in New York and established Jacob & Co in 1986. The company’s founding ambition was to produce extravagant jewellery which would attract the most affluent clientele. It wasn’t long before the brand rose into stardom, gaining attention of the growing American rap subculture of the 1990s.

Arabo’s fame and acclaim escalated to peak levels, after the underground hip-hop star Biz Markie approached the upstart jeweller with an unusual request for a striking signature piece, that would be easily seen by his fans while worn on the stage. In response, Arabo produced just what Biz had in mind by creating a large, four-fingered diamond ring which spelled out Biz’s name.

Since then, Arabo became the ultimate jeweller of the hip-hop clientele, earning a nickname ‘Jacob the Jeweller’. As the the 1990s saw a significant increase in popularity of rap music and growth of the industry, Arabo’s popularity and profits also expanded. Diamonds were no longer chiefly associated with brides and successful women, but became the go-to- gem of black and Latino men who delivered their own flair to the masses.

Jacob & Co’s designs appeal to those with an admiration of all things unique, ostentatious, and madly expensive. Their ever-widening circle of high-flying clients now includes notable individuals such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kanye West, Jay Z and Beyoncé.

By expanding their collection and offering not only striking jewellery, but also remarkable timepieces, Arabo has been also able to appeal to the most avid watch aficionados with a distinct taste.

In 2002 Jacob & Co released their very first timepiece – The Five Time Zone Watch. An instant success, it was designed to accommodate the needs of his clients who often switch between time zones. This luxury watch features five separate time displays: New York, LA, Tokyo, Paris and a main home time zone.

Four years from the brand’s watch debut, Jacob &Co launched the Quenttin. This luxury timepiece comes with an impressive 31-day power reserve. It utilises seven barrels, and has a vertical tourbillon that can be viewed through a side window. This remarkable piece of engineering has been awarded the Design Award given by New York City’s Travel + Leisure magazine.

In 2014 the company produced yet another impressive watch, the extraordinary Astronomia Tourbillon. This was Jacob & Co’s Grand Complication masterpiece. The watch is equipped with a fascinating movement which imitates the movements of the earth and the moon. Furthermore, it features a triaxial tourbillon with a fiery oscillator at its heart which represents the sun, while the moon is symbolised with a diamond. This incredible, three dimensional timepiece is presented in a hemisphere of sapphire crystal. The movement is also visible through large side windows. Aside from being an impressive timekeeping tool of the highest calibre, it is also a fascinating work of art.

Jacob & Co’s watches are unique for their use of innovative movements, but also for their bold, eye-catching appearance.
