Popularly referred to as the ‘king of watches’
Rolex is one of the world’s most popular luxury watchmaking brands, appealing to successful individuals across diverse occupations, from politicians to movie stars alike. It is without a doubt one of the world’s most sought after status symbol.
America’s former President Barack Obama is a watch man. Although during his term he mostly wore inconspicuous, ‘cheap’ timepieces retailing for no more than $800, as a civil citizen, Barack Obama no longer refrains from expressing his taste for luxury timepieces.
Spotted at the Toronto Invictus Games earlier this year, Obama attracted much attention to his shiny new Rolex Cellini in white gold. The white dial in a 39 millimetre case retails for £11,400, making it by far the most expensive watch the former president has been seen wearing. Arguably, his choice of the elegant Rolex Cellini, which is the brand’s most reserved, classic watch is a perfect fit for a former president.
Since 1978, Rolex has established a firm presence at the Wimbledon tennis tournament, becoming not only the official timekeeper but also a major partner with some of the most accomplished players. This includes the Swedish superstar – Björn Borg, who is one of the best all-time performers in tennis history. Winning 62 titles, including 11 Grand Slam titles, he was ranked No. 1 in the world in 1979 and 1980. Although he retired at the young age of 26, he has a legacy of athletic excellence and is popularly regarded as the first rock star of tennis.
Fittingly, his Rolex – Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 in 18 karat gold, was the first wristwatch to display the date and day of the week spelt out in full in a window on the dial. The Day-Date is the ultimate watch par excellence of influential people. For Borg, it is an honourable reminder of all of his achievements on the courts.
The blockbuster Hollywood movie-star Mark Wahlberg, also appreciates a great Rolex watch and has a collection to prove it. Amongst his favourites are many of the brand’s finest watches, including the Submariner dive watch, Yacht-Master II, and multiple Daytona watches. Luckily for him, i’m sure film starts don’t have to worry about the Rolex Service cost to have his collection maintained.
The actor is most often seen wearing the Rolex Yacht-Master II. This 44mm large, eye-catching watch is the brand’s largest watch currently available. It complements Wahlberg’s style and suits his physical built. Aside from its size, Wahlberg’s Yacht-Master II, much like Wahlberg himself, does not shy from attention for its statement-like colouring achieved through a solid 18k yellow gold construction and bright blue Cerachrom ceramic bezel.
Steve McQueen is perhaps, along with TAG Heuer, one of Rolexes’ most celebrated brand ambassadors of all time. The ‘King of Cool’ helped shape the brand’s public recognition as a truly desirable line of luxury products, emblematic of effortless sophistication.
An incredible influencer, actor and amateur racing driver, McQueen was the driving force behind the brand’s launch of Rolex Explorer II. To this day, the watch is known as the ‘Steve McQueen Explorer’. It is highly sought after by collectors and watch aficionados for its rarity and exclusivity, due to being discontinued in 1985. Similar in design to the Explorer II, the Rolex Submariner was McQueens everyday watch. Seen so often on his wrist, the Submariner has become equally iconic as its famous owner.
One of Hollywood’s most highly regarded film-makers, the mastermind behind Titanic, and Avatar – James Cameron is yet another avid fan of Rolex. Throughout his career, Cameron has continually sought new inspiration and like a true explorer, he is on an enduring quest to discover the unknown.
In honour of his adventurous spirit and achievement, in 2014 Rolex released the Deepsea D-Blue Dial watch, dedicated especially to him. The Deepsea D-Blue Dial is largely based on the standard Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea watch, but has a unique dial which changes colour from blue to black. On a day-to- day basis, the film-maker wears an Oyster Perpetual Submariner. This 40mm, stainless steel watch with luminescent hour markers is characterised by its robust design and functionality.
